The Wisdom of Women: A Traditional Kitchen Party
One of the most sacred parts of preparing a bride for marriage takes place spaces held quietly, lovingly, and powerfully by the women in her life. This is known as Amabhaso.
Amabhaso is a traditional Xhosa bridal shower hosted by the bride’s family, typically held a day or two before the formal welcoming of the groom. During this gathering, women from the family, her friends and wider community come together to celebrate and support the bride as she prepares to enter married life. The bride is gifted household such as pots, linen, and kitchen items that will help her build her new home.
At the heart of Amabhaso is a deeply meaningful tradition called Ukuyalwa, a moment during Amabhaso where elder women sit with the bride and offer heartfelt, unfiltered advice about marriage. These conversations are grounded in ancestral values and lived experience, guiding the bride on how to carry herself with dignity, honour her new family, support her husband, and create a peaceful home.
All women are welcome to attend this cultural and meaningful occasion.
