Welcoming of the groom
Prior to a traditional Xhosa wedding, there's a formal welcoming of the groom into the bride’s home and introduction to her family. This occasion is known as Ukwamkela Abayeni.
Held after Amabhaso, this ceremony marks the spiritual and cultural joining of two families. The groom arrives with his delegation, and is welcomed by the bride’s family through ritual, song, food, and celebration. It is a powerful moment that acknowledges not only the groom’s entry into the bride’s home, but also the unity of both clans.
The day includes several customs, such as the slaughtering of livestock, the exchange of gifts, and ancestral blessings. All done in the presence of both families and the wider community. It is a homecoming, a public declaration of unity, and a moment of joy.
Everyone is welcome to attend this significant day.
